Herga Story

Our winery is rooted in one of Slovenia's most prestigious wine-growing areas - Jeruzalem Slovenija. This land has been dedicated to viticulture for centuries, offering an ideal terroir for crafting outstanding wines.

With 21 hectares of meticulously selected south and southwest-facing slopes, we craft wines that embody the authenticity of our land.  

The soil composition in our vineyards is exceptionally diverse, ranging from light, well-draining sandstone to heavier soils with clay and marl. These variations allow us to produce wines that are distinct, reflecting the unique microclimates of our region.  

Our vines are predominantly white varieties (65%), including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and the indigenous Šipon.

The remaining 35% are red varieties, featuring Pinot Noir and Merlot - an unusual but distinctive selection for this region.

We also nurture an old vineyard planted with Šipon, preserving rare clones that are no longer found elsewhere.

Our estate is a place where history meets innovation. The heart of our winery is a stunning yellow manor with its oldest part - a more than 200-year-old wine cellar. Beneath its arches, wooden barrels mature our wines, preserving the craftsmanship and heritage of generations before us.

Our cellar holds a mix of barriques, 500-liter casks, and large wooden vats, each playing a role in shaping the complexity of our wines.

For our fresher styles, we also utilize stainless steel tanks, ensuring vibrant expression while allowing certain wines to rest on lees for additional character.  

A unique part of our estate is Slovenia’s first national wine bank.This special collection preserves vintages that tell the story of our land ,allowing them to evolve and be enjoyed for decades to come.

Mitja Herga is an esteemed winemaker with 35 harvests to his name. His journey in winemaking is both professional and deeply personal.

With a career spanning over a decade as the director and headwinemaker of Slovenia’s largest winery, Puklavec Family Wines, Mitja decided to return to his roots - to the vineyards, the cellar, and the hands-on craft of winemaking.  

The estate in Mihalovci carries his family’s legacy. His grandfather was a devoted winemaker, and Mitja’s first taste of wine - a Šipon from 1983 - was one his grandfather had crafted. This connection shaped his vision: to revive his family’s story in the Ormož hills of Jeruzalem Slovenija and elevate the region’s wines to new heights.  

Over the years, Mitja has honed his skills not only in Slovenia but also in renowned wine regions across New Zealand and South Africa.

His commitment to authenticity and quality is reflected in every bottle produced on the estate. By blending tradition with experience gained abroad, he continues a journey that began generations ago.

Our winemaking philosophy revolves around sustainability. We believe in a balanced approach - minimal intervention in the vineyard, respect for the environment, and winemaking techniques that enhance the natural character of our grapes. By carefully selecting vineyard sites best suited for each variety, we ensure that every wine tells a story of its origin.  

One of our greatest passions is reviving Šipon, a grape variety deeply tied to this region. Mitja’s first wine memory is of his grandfather’s Šipon, and today, we are dedicated to restoring its reputation among the stars of Slovenian wines.
